Job Description

The Nevada State Public Health Laboratory (NSPHL) at the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine (UNR Med) seeks to fill a full-time Director of the Nevada State Public Health Laboratory. The Director of the NSPHL shall be responsible for the oversight, management, testing quality and scientific/academic output of the Laboratory. A substantial responsibility of the position includes maintaining a professional public image at the community, state and national level working in concert with team members, infectious disease experts and the Dean to set goals and promote the NSPHL. The Director maintains responsibility for managing the State Health Lab response to ongoing and emerging health concerns in Nevada, as well as response to public health emergencies.

The Director shall additionally oversee the construction of, and migration to a new, $75,000,000 facility located close to the current laboratory on the UNR campus, to be completed by the start of 2027. The new facility triples the size of the current laboratory and shall introduce statewide toxicological laboratory services to the State of Nevada.

The Director shall integrate the public health laboratory system into the state's infrastructure including statewide and rural labs and shall continuously promote the state public health laboratory while developing strategies to expand NSPHL awareness, capacity and technologies to benefit Nevadans and enhance surveillance activities in the state. The Director will interact with various state health officials including epidemiologists, county health directors, state health officials and legislators throughout Nevada to assure compliance and to accommodate public health laboratory services. The Director will also be responsible for securing funds from State, Federal and local sources or by billing to support expansion of the laboratory's portfolio.

The Director is expected to teach at the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine including in the proposed Clinical Laboratory Scientist Program. The academic appointment will be in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology and will be at a faculty level commensurate with the candidate's experience, accomplishments, and record of academic achievement. The Director will report directly to the Chair of Microbiology & Immunology with a dotted line to the Dean of UNR Med. This is a non-tenure track academic position with expectations of rank at the Associate or Professor levels.

Required Qualifications

1. PhD, MD/DO, or combination in a scientific field

2. Minimum of five years of related laboratory experience working in a CLIA/CAP multidisciplinary, high-complexity laboratory.



Preferred Qualifications

1. Prior teaching or academic experience

2. Public Health Leadership or Directorship

3. Legislative experience

4. Public Health programmatic and/or policy experience as related to public health testing

Directorship Requirements for Lab Licensure

1) Physician licensure to practice medicine in this State and be certified in anatomical and clinical pathology, or in clinical pathology, by:

(a) The American Board of Pathology; OR

(b) The American Osteopathic Board of Pathology;

OR

2) Hold an earned doctoral degree from an accredited institution, with a chemical, physical, biological or clinical laboratory science as the major, AND:

(a) Be certified by at least one (preferably more) of the following:
  • The American Board of Medical Microbiology; and/or
  • The American Board of Clinical Chemistry; and/or
  • The American Board of Bioanalysis; and/or
  • The American Board of Medical Laboratory Immunology; and/or
  • The American Board of Forensic Toxicology; and/or
  • The American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics; and/or
  • The National Registry of Certified Chemists; and/or
  • The American Board of Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics; and/or
  • Any other institution approved by the United States Department of Health and Human Services in accordance with 42 C.F.R. § 493.1443(b)(3); OR

(b) Possess qualifications which are equivalent to those required for certification by any of the institutions listed in paragraph (a).

Schedule

This position has a variable work schedule, and the incumbent must be available during emergencies.

This role requires travel statewide.
